The Legend of Barbarik
Before the Mahabharata war began, Barbarik, the son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi, wished to participate in the battle. He was equipped with three unique arrows gifted by Lord Shiva. He promised his mother that he would fight on the side that was losing.
Lord Krishna knew this could lead to the complete destruction of both armies. He asked Barbarik for his head as charity. Without hesitation, Barbarik cut off his head and offered it to Krishna. Krishna, pleased by this ultimate sacrifice, blessed him and granted him the name “Shyam”, declaring that he would be worshipped in Kaliyug as the savior of the defeated.
