Major Festivals & Events at Khatu Dham

Khatu Shyam Mandir is a hub of spiritual energy, hosting several massive festivals throughout the year. The town comes alive with colors, lights, and bhajan echoes during these holy days.

1. The Grand Phalgun Mela (फाल्गुन मेला)

The annual Phalgun Mela is the most prominent festival of Khatu Shyam Ji, held in the Hindu month of Phalgun (typically late February or March). It runs from Phalgun Sudi Ashtami (8th day) to Dwadashi (12th day). Millions of devotees carry saffron flags (Nishan) and walk barefoot from Ringas to Khatu town. It is a spectacle of absolute faith, where the entire route is decorated, and local groups set up stalls (Bhandaras) offering food, water, and rest to pilgrims.

2. Shyam Janmotsav (बाबा श्याम जन्मोत्सव)

Baba Shyam's birthday is celebrated with grand celebrations on Dev Uthani Gyaras (Kartik Shukla Ekadashi). The temple is decorated with tons of exotic flowers, a massive birthday cake is offered to Baba Shyam, and special night vigils (Jagrans) are held across Khatu town. Special Prasad (typically dry fruits and mawa pedas) is distributed among devotees.

3. Monthly Shukla Paksha Ekadashi

Every month, the 11th day of the bright moon phase (Shukla Paksha Ekadashi) is celebrated as a mini-festival. Thousands of devotees observe fasts and visit the temple. Due to the high footfall, the temple remains open continuously (without night closure) on Ekadashi days.

4. Nishan Yatra (निशान यात्रा)

Nishan Yatra represents carrying the flag of Barbarik's sacrifice to Lord Krishna. The Nishan is a triangular flag made of saffron, red, or golden silk fabric, decorated with coconut, peacock feathers, and images of Baba Shyam. Devotees start their walk from Ringas Junction (approx. 17 km away) chanting "Jai Shree Shyam" and offer their flags at the temple's exit point.
