The Story of Shree Khatu Shyam Ji

The inspiring story of Barbarik's sacrifice and his blessing to be worshipped in Krishna's name.

Who was Barbarik?

Barbarik was a highly powerful warrior of the Mahabharata period, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha. From a young age, he was trained in archery by his mother Maurvi and obtained three infallible arrows (Teer) from Lord Shiva. These arrows had the power to mark and destroy all targets in a single shot. Because of this power, Barbarik could have ended the entire Kurukshetra war in minutes, making him one of the most powerful warriors of his time.

The Promise to Fight for the Weak

Before starting for the Kurukshetra battlefield, Barbarik promised his mother Maurvi that he would only fight on behalf of the weaker side ("Haare Ka Sahara"). When Lord Krishna heard about this vow, he realized its dangerous implication: since the Pandavas had a smaller army, Barbarik would join them. But once he joined, the Kauravas would become weaker. Following his promise, Barbarik would then have to switch sides to fight for the Kauravas. This constant switching would lead to the destruction of both armies.

The Sacrifice of the Head (Sheesh Dan)

To save the armies, Lord Krishna disguised himself as a Brahmin and met Barbarik on the road. Krishna challenged Barbarik to prove his archery by piercing all the leaves of a nearby peepal tree with a single arrow. Barbarik closed his eyes and shot the arrow, which marked all the leaves. Krishna placed his foot over one leaf, but the arrow hovered over his foot, demonstrating its precision. Recognizing his divinity, Barbarik requested the Brahmin to show his true form. Krishna revealed himself and asked for Barbarik's head as a charity (Dan) to sanctify the battlefield. Barbarik cut off his head and handed it to Krishna, earning the title "Sheesh Ke Daani".

Krishna's Blessing and Shyam Title

Moved by his sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed Barbarik's head and placed it on a high hill overlooking the battlefield so he could witness the entire war. After the war, Krishna declared that in Kali Yuga, Barbarik would be worshipped under his own name (Shyam) and anyone who offered prayers with a pure heart would be blessed. Worshipping Khatu Shyam Ji is believed to bring peace, hope, and relief from difficulties.
