Khatu Shyam Ji Ekadashi Guide

Learn the spiritual significance, fasting rules, and home puja process for Shukla Paksha Ekadashi.

Spiritual Importance of Ekadashi (Gyaras)

Ekadashi (the 11th day of the lunar fortnight) is highly sacred for Khatu Shyam Ji devotees, particularly the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of every month. The annual grand Phalgun Mela and Baba's birthday (Dev Uthani Gyaras) both culminate on Ekadashi days. Devotees observe complete or partial fasts on this day to express their devotion and receive Baba's protection.

Fasting Rules & Guidelines

Devotees choose from three types of fasts depending on their health:

  • Nirjala Vrat: Fasting without water (practiced by advanced devotees).
  • Sajal Vrat: Fasting consuming only water, milk, and fresh fruit juices.
  • Phalahar Vrat: Consuming non-grain fasting food like buckwheat (kuttu) flour, water chestnut (singhara) flour, potatoes, and sago (sabudana) khichdi.

Ekadashi Home Puja Process

To perform Ekadashi puja at home, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the temple area. Bath the deity with gangajal and dress him in a fresh poshak.
  2. Light a ghee diya and keep it lit throughout the day if possible (Akhand Diya).
  3. Recite the Khatu Shyam Ji Chalisa and sing the Aarti.
  4. Spend the evening singing bhajans or chanting the mantra using a Tulsi mala.

Special Bhog & Shringar Ideas

Drape the idol in a bright saffron or golden yellow silk poshak. Offer special bhog sweets like mawa peda, kheer, or fresh fruits. Place a clean Tulsi leaf on top of the sweets before offering them to the deity.
