History of Shree Khatu Shyam Ji

Explore the historical foundations of the Sikar temple and the traditional origins of Khatu Dham.

Mahabharata Origins & Barbarik's Sacrifice

According to popular devotional beliefs, the history of Khatu Shyam Ji is rooted in the epic Mahabharata. Barbarik was the grandson of Bhima (the second Pandava brother) and the son of Ghatotkacha and Maurvi. He was an exceptionally powerful warrior who obtained three infallible arrows from Lord Shiva. In the Kurukshetra war, Barbarik promised his mother to fight on the side that was losing. Recognizing that this vow would lead to the destruction of both sides, Lord Krishna disguised himself as a Brahmin and requested Barbarik's head as a charity (Dan). Barbarik cheerfully cut off his head and offered it to Krishna, who blessed him that he would be worshipped in Kali Yuga in Krishna's own name—Shyam.

Construction of Sikar Temple (1027 AD)

Historical accounts suggest that the first temple constructed to house the discovered Sheesh (head) of Barbarik was built in 1027 AD by King Roopsingh of Harsangipur and his queen Narmada Kanwar. The site of the discovery was a spot in Khatu village where a cow's udder spontaneously began flowing with milk. In the 18th century (around 1720 AD), the noble Abhai Singh renovated the temple structure and added marble cladding, creating the foundations of the spacious modern complex visible today.

Separating Devotional Tradition and Verified History

In researching Khatu Shyam Ji, it is important to distinguish between archaeological history and popular devotional tradition. While the construction details of the temple in Sikar during the 11th and 18th centuries are supported by local records, the stories linking Barbarik to the Mahabharata and Lord Krishna's blessing represent deep, sacred beliefs held by millions of devotees. Both elements contribute to Khatu Dham's unique spiritual identity.
